Medical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture is a safe, effective treatment integrated into my osteopathic practice here in Gdańsk, Poland. All consultations are conducted in English, making this an accessible option for expats and international patients across the Trójmiasto region.
Unlike traditional acupuncture, which is based on energy meridians, medical acupuncture is grounded in modern anatomy, physiology, and evidence-based medicine. As a qualified osteopath registered with the British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS), I use fine, sterile needles to stimulate specific points in the muscles and nervous system, triggering your body’s natural healing responses.
How It Works
When a fine needle is inserted into the skin and muscle, it stimulates the nervous system to release natural painkillers (such as endorphins) and improve blood flow to the area. This process can:
- Reduce muscle tension and spasms
- Interrupt pain signals sent to the brain
- Encourage the body’s own anti-inflammatory mechanisms
- Promote relaxation of the fascia and surrounding tissues
Treatment is tailored to your specific condition. Needles are typically left in place for 10–20 minutes while you rest comfortably. Most patients find the experience relaxing, with minimal discomfort upon insertion.
Benefits
Medical acupuncture is often used alongside osteopathic manual therapy and exercise prescription (such as Pilates or somatic movement) to enhance results. Potential benefits include:
- Pain relief — effective for both acute and chronic pain conditions
- Muscle relaxation — helps release tight bands of muscle (trigger points) that restrict movement
- Reduced inflammation — supports the body’s natural recovery processes
- Improved function — can restore range of motion more quickly when combined with movement therapy
- Stress reduction — promotes a deep state of relaxation, aiding overall wellbeing
Note: Individual results vary. Acupuncture is a valuable tool within a comprehensive treatment plan, but is not a guaranteed cure for all conditions.
Common Uses
I commonly use medical acupuncture in Gdańsk to assist in the management of:
- Back and neck pain
- Joint issues: such as osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder, and tennis elbow
- Headaches and migraines: particularly tension-type and cervicogenic headaches
- Muscle injuries: strains, sports injuries, and myofascial pain syndrome
- Postural stress: pain resulting from prolonged sitting or repetitive strain
Safety and Qualifications
Your safety is paramount. I use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles. Medical acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a trained professional. Mild side effects such as temporary bruising or slight soreness can occur but usually resolve quickly.
